Bucerías, whose name comes from the Nahuatl word 'place of divers,' was for centuries a village of pearl and shell divers. Local divers would plunge into the crystalline waters of Banderas Bay searching for treasures from the sea, a tradition that gave the town its name and character.

While Puerto Vallarta grew as a tourist destination in the 60s and 70s, Bucerías remained a quiet fishing village. Local families lived from fishing, agriculture, and small commerce, preserving traditions that went back generations.

Transformation came gradually in the 1990s when Canadian and American expatriates discovered its charm. Unlike the massive hotel development in other areas, Bucerías grew organically, street by street, house by house. New residents integrated into the community, learning Spanish, participating in patron saint festivals, and adopting the town's unhurried pace.

Today Bucerías offers 2 kilometers of golden beach, a historic center with cobblestone streets, and a flourishing art scene. Every Thursday, the Art Walk brings together local and international artists in downtown galleries. It's a place where you can have breakfast at an organic café, lunch on fresh seafood with your feet in the sand, and dinner at a gourmet restaurant, all without leaving town.
